Venezia Photo Workshop: Building Meaningful Documentary Stories

Photography is more than witnessing events it is a way of understanding the world, building relationships, and giving lasting form to stories that matter.

Led by Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur, this four-day workshop explores documentary storytelling through the complementary languages of photography and writing. Drawing on more than three decades of collaborative practice, participants are invited to develop or refine a personal documentary project while learning how images, words, sequencing, and narrative structure work together to create meaningful visual stories.

Whether participants arrive with an ongoing project, an emerging idea, or a completed body of work ready for dissemination, the workshop provides individual mentoring to strengthen both the creative vision and the practical tools needed to bring documentary work into the world. Through portfolio reviews, shooting sessions in Venice, editing, writing exercises, ethical discussions, and conversations around publishing and audience engagement, participants develop a deeper understanding of long-term documentary practice while refining their own visual language.
