Story about Bar Pilots in Smithsonian Magazine

In the February 2009 issue of Smithsonian Magazine they published a story I photographed about the dangerous work that river bar pilots do to keep ship traffic safe. I shot this last November in Astoria, Oregon, a beautiful little town tucked in the hills above the Pacific Ocean and on the mouth of the Columbia River. The link below is to the magazine's website and a gallery of photos.

Curse review on Photoeye magazine

Please check out this new review in Photoeye of my book, Curse of the Black Gold, and Lou Dematteis' book, Crude Reflections, both about issues around oil. Interesting approach to this issue.

Bar Pilots of the Pacific

The February 2009 issue of Smithsonian magazine features photographs taken by Ed that illustrate an article written by Matt Jenkins. The story documents the professional boat pilots who guide ships through the turgid waters where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. Known as "the bar" or "Graveyard of the Pacific", this waterway is one of the most dangerous harbor mouths on the planet.
