Faces of Caring 2007

Nurses play an invaluable, and often silent, role to people across the world. A nurse's role is crucial in our society.

Healthcare budget cuts, job burnout, tougher immigration laws and the percentage of nurses reaching retirement age, has resulted in a critical global shortage of nurses.

In an effort to call attention to this shortage and to promote nursing as a career choice, American Journal of Nursing (AJN), the largest and oldest circulated nursing journal in the world, has curated an exhibition of contemporary images of working nurses. This exhibition has been culled from an international photojournalism contest. The exhibition is set to officially open on Friday, May 11 to coincide with Nurses Week.

Throughout Ed's career, Ed has been witness to the care and support of nurses worldwide. Ed's work with Aging in America and The Uninsured, has given Ed the opportunity to document the intimate relationships and the steadfast loyalty these selfless health care workers provide. Whether welcoming us kicking and screaming into the world, or holding our hands as we take our last breath, if you are fortunate, a nurse will be the first or last person by your side.

Two of Ed's images will be featured in this exhibition. His image of Hospice aid Debbie Schaffer caring for her patient, 95-year old Lova McNair was the recipient of a first place award. (see images below).

The exhibition opens on May 11 for a month-long run at New York University's Kimmel Center in Greenwich Village, NYC.

4th Anniversary of Iraq War MSNBC.COM Runs Series On Wounded Veterans

Since early 2004, I have worked on stories about American soldiers who have been wounded in the Iraq war. Along with other photographers, including Nina Berman and James Nachtwey, there is a growing body of photographic documentation that gives an honest and vital picture of what's happening to the young men and women returning from Iraq. Over the past four years this war has created a new generation of scarred young Americans numbering in the tens of thousands. We must pay attention to them and to this issue. It will effect all of us.

Here are two links to the MSNBC.COM stories. Please take a moment to watch them if you haven't already:
