Hey Ed, this is Paulo, from Brazil. I just wanted to congratulate you for this work. The website is amazing, as the book must be, too.
Although I never expect much from our governments, I hope your work can bring some consciousness to them and possibly affect some real change for those people.

well at least Brazil is being smart about using its cane sugar crop and other forms of biofuels for alternative sources. But with the potentially new oil finds for Brazil, let's hope they manage this well and not screw things up. We need to put our collective energies to finding alternatives to oil or we are doomed.

i just can hope that your book would open world's eyes and move them to do something about it.
And that point has been a question in my head about photojournalism. I feel stucked about the condition that I have done nothing for other human with my pictures. I don't want just looking and hunting for the best image. I want to submit a dot that can help in something. what you've done is a new inspiration. thanks also for that
and talking about oil. I'm from Indonesia, and this country is (like Nigeria) rich in natural resources, including oil. But we are badly hit by the increasing oil prices. One part because of what the world market has done, the other part is because of the wrong policy from the indonesian government. They gave the rights to explore oil in a region in east java for 50 years to Exxon Mobile. meanwhile the locals get nothing out of it. People lived not far from there are also exploring oil in traditional way. And they are actually doing that "illegaly". Exxon Mobile explores "legally"... I'm thinking of doing that for an individual project. I would be happy if you could give me some opinion.
